Bride & Groom's Garter Toss Surprise: Pregnancy Reveal at 400-Wedding Guests
2024-12-03
During a wedding reception in Burbank, California on Sept. 21, Chidozie and Nnenna Onyima took their guests by surprise. Instead of the usual garter toss, the groom pulled out sonogram photographs from beneath the bride's dress, revealing their first child's pregnancy. This unexpected moment was captured on video by Eze Egeonuigwe and has since gone viral.

How the Surprise Was Planned

Initially, the couple had thought of having the MC do a his/hers style game to lead into the pregnancy reveal. But due to their program, they couldn't fit it in. So, Chidozie came up with the idea of adding the garter toss. Only the bridal party and media crew knew about the surprise. When the time came, Chidozie met Nnenna in the center of the dance floor. He went beneath her wedding dress and suddenly emerged with four sonogram images hanging from his mouth. The crowd went wild as friends and family pulled out their phones and jumped up and down.

The Tradition of the Garter Toss

Traditionally, during a garter toss, the groom tosses the bride's garter into a crowd of single men. The man who catches it is considered the next one to get married. In this case, the single men were initially lined up for the toss. But once they realized it was sonogram photographs, they began cheering with excitement. The photos were not thrown, but the moment was celebrated by all, with guests rushing to the dance floor.

The Couple's Journey

Chidozie and Nnenna met in pharmacy school at Howard University in 2019 and started dating in 2020. Three years later, on April 15, 2023, Chidozie proposed to Nnenna during her graduation photoshoot at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. They first had a traditional wedding in Nigeria on Dec. 29, 2023. But their plans changed when they found out about the pregnancy in early May. Their baby is expected to arrive during the first week of January 2025.
