2024-12-18
Move over, Taron Egerton! A new chapter has begun in the portrayal of Elton John. The iconic "Rocket Man" singer, now 77, has released a captivating new music video for his classic holiday song "Step into Christmas." In this video, the role of a young Elton John is brought to life by the talented actress Cara Delevingne.

An Idol's Dream Come True

Delevingne described John as an "idol" and shared how being asked to play him was a "dream that I didn't know I had until it happened." She humorously added, "Honestly, I wish I could pretend to be Elton every day. I hope that Elton may one day return the favor and agree to play me in my not-yet-developed, written, pitched or funded biopic. Fingers crossed."

The Recording Studio Backdrop

The meta video unfolds in a recording studio behind the scenes of the original "Step into Christmas." Delevingne flawlessly portrays a young John, recreating his look and performing at a piano adorned with a feather boa. While her rendition uses John's own track, the recreation is seamlessly mixed with footage from the original video and reenactments of producers putting it together. This gives viewers a unique glimpse into the making of the classic song.It shows a fairly chaotic production, with a fan barging in holding a sign at one point and producers corralling a turkey in a hallway. John himself shared in a statement that he saw Delevingne at Glastonbury Festival last summer and they immediately agreed to work together. He said, "When someone suggested the idea of her playing me in a riff on the 1973 'Step into Christmas' video, I just thought it was the perfect opportunity. Thank God Cara thought the same because it came out great."

The Impact of the Eye Infection

John recently revealed that he has been facing significant vision loss due to an eye infection. This has left him uncertain about when he can resume recording. In November, he told "Good Morning America," "It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see. And my left eye's not the greatest. There's hope and encouragement that it will be OK, but I'm kind of stuck at the moment, because I can do (an interview) like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don't know, because I can't see a lyric for a start."Written by John and Bernie Taupin, "Step into Christmas" was released in November 1973 and reached the top spot on the Billboard Christmas Singles chart. Last year, the track was certified triple platinum in John's native United Kingdom. The latest release for John follows the debut of his new Disney+ documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late" and his performance with Dua Lipa in a primetime CBS special. Despite the challenges he is currently facing, John's music continues to captivate audiences around the world.
