Central Iowans Finish Thanksgiving at Varsity Cinema's 'Glicked' Showings
2024-11-29
After indulging in the traditional Thanksgiving fare of turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, many Central Iowans found a unique way to end their holiday - by heading to the movie theater. Varsity Cinema, a local gem, offered two showings each of "Wicked" and "Gladiator II" on that Thursday evening. This double feature quickly became known as "Glicked," captivating the local audience.

The Impact on Revenue and Programming

Tech manager Graham Bechman emphasized the significance of these big movies. "Having such blockbuster films brings in a substantial amount of revenue," he explained. "It enables us to organize the special events and programming that our patrons truly enjoy. It's a win-win situation for both the cinema and our customers."

After four years of extensive renovations, Varsity Cinema reopened in 2022. The double features have played a crucial role in keeping the lights on and ensuring the cinema's continued success. Bechman shared, "We've been pleasantly surprised by the response. People are excited to have us back, and they are actively investing in our theater by coming here."

Family outings at the movie theater have become a popular choice for spending time together after the big feast. Kelly Hinners, a resident of Clive, expressed her delight. "We don't get the chance to go to the theaters often, especially as a family. But this Thanksgiving, it was a wonderful experience. I saw 'Gladiator II' earlier this week and now I'm enjoying 'Wicked.' It's truly a unique 'Glicked' experience."

Continued Showings and Audience Support

Varsity Cinema is hopeful that they will be able to continue showing these two films for several more weeks. As long as the audience continues to show their support by buying tickets, the cinema will be able to provide this entertainment option. Bechman stated, "We're grateful for the response we've received so far. It gives us the motivation to keep bringing great movies to our community."

The local community has embraced this Thanksgiving movie tradition. Families are making it a point to come together and enjoy the cinematic experience. It has become more than just a movie screening; it's a part of the holiday celebration.

With its cozy atmosphere and diverse movie offerings, Varsity Cinema has become a beloved destination for Central Iowans. The "Glicked" double feature has added an extra layer of excitement to the Thanksgiving weekend, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
