In recent times, my colleagues have been murmuring that 2024 wasn't a great year for movies. However, I'm not entirely convinced. Tradition typically dictates that a critic selects just ten favorite titles at the year's end (or early December) for their best-of list. But this year, I had so many worthy contenders that I defied that convention and chose 20 movies instead. In fact, I could have easily picked 30 titles. Looking through my favorites, I notice a wide range of genres - from ambitious blockbusters to bold independents, heart-wrenching dramas to horror, action to romance, thrillers to animated features. One thing that stands out is the absence of out-and-out comedies. Perhaps it was a good year for movies overall, but not for every single genre. (Hollywood studios, take note. There is a large audience out there eager to laugh, especially in these times.)
Without getting sidetracked by complaints about how these "year-end" lists keep creeping earlier and earlier, let's delve into my personal picks for the 20 best movies of 2024...
Our team has carefully curated a list of the top 20 movies that truly stood out in 2024. These films represent the diversity and excellence that the movie industry had to offer. Each one has its own unique charm and story to tell.
From the grand spectacles of the blockbusters to the intimate tales of the independents, these movies have captured the hearts and minds of audiences. They have pushed the boundaries of creativity and storytelling, leaving a lasting impact.
Dahomey, a film that showcases a different side of storytelling; Do Not Expect Too Much From the End of the World, which takes us on a thought-provoking journey; Evil Does Not Exist, presenting a unique perspective on the world; Janet Planet, a captivating exploration; Made in England: The Films of Powell & Pressburger, a tribute to a bygone era; The Old Oak, with its timeless charm; Sing Sing, adding a touch of musical magic; Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat, with its intense atmosphere; Thelma, a story that resonates; and Wicked, a tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Many hit films from the past got sequels, but most of them turned out to be flops and have now been largely forgotten. These are the sequels that slipped through the cracks and are worth revisiting.
Some of these sequels had the potential to be great but failed to live up to expectations. Others simply didn't capture the magic of the original. It's a reminder that not all sequels are created equal.
