David Kauffman, an influential figure in the world of music education, has been chosen as the 2025 inductee to the Maryland Music Education Association (MMEA) Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor celebrates his outstanding contributions to teaching and administration within the field of music. Over the past three decades, Kauffman has held various roles in both public and private sectors, significantly enhancing music education programs. His dedication and leadership have left an indelible mark on countless students and educators alike. Since joining Anne Arundel County Public Schools (AACPS) in 2018, he has played a pivotal role in refining and advancing the Apex Arts Magnet Program. The award recognizes not only his professional achievements but also his commitment to fostering a vibrant musical community.
Kauffman's career spans over 30 years, during which he has worn many hats in the realm of education. From 1998 to 2015, he was actively involved in direct student engagement, serving as a teacher, band director, fine arts coordinator, and assistant principal. His expertise and passion for music led him to become the Coordinator of Music at AACPS in 2015. In this capacity, he worked tirelessly to enhance instructional resources and performance opportunities. Since 2018, as Senior Manager of the Apex Arts Magnet Program, Kauffman has further refined the program's mission and expanded its offerings. His efforts have ensured that students receive comprehensive and high-quality music education.
Beyond his administrative duties, Kauffman has made significant contributions to the broader music community. He has supervised teacher interns from Towson University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County, nurturing the next generation of music educators. Additionally, since 2021, he has directed the Chesapeake Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Jazz Combo, fostering young talent in jazz. His involvement extends internationally through his role as President-Elect of the Jazz Education Network, where he has served on the Board of Directors since 2019. Kauffman's leadership has also been recognized by the National Association for Music Education, where he chaired the Council for Jazz Education from 2018 to 2022.
