The Everlasting Resilience of Folk Music: A Gathering of Talented Artists
2024-12-19
Bluesman Big Bill Broonzy once shared a profound perspective on music, stating that all music is folk music. This sentiment highlights the existence and evolution of a folk tradition in the world of music. From its Scottish and Appalachian origins to the vibrant folk boom of the late '50s - early '60s, folk music has continuously paid homage to the past while envisioning a better future. Four remarkable folk artists - Lucy Kaplansky, John Gorka, Patty Larkin, and Cliff Eberhardt - are set to grace the Sunset Center on Friday, December 20. This event, which has been a part of the folk scene since 1994 with varying performers and was put on hold during the COVID era, is a reunion of sorts.
Lucy Kaplansky: A Journey Through Time and Emotion
Kaplansky embarked on her musical journey at the young age of 18, falling in love with the singer-songwriters of the '70s such as Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, and James Taylor. Especially Joni Mitchell had a significant influence on her. While not a protest singer in the traditional sense, she recently updated the lyrics of "Mary's Window." This tune was originally written after Joe Biden's 2020 presidential victory and the Democratic Senate triumphs in Georgia, with the hope of a Kamala Harris win. However, she remains undeterred and continues to create beautiful music. She also has a new album, "The Lucy Story: Unreleased and Rare Tracks, 1976 - 2023," which showcases her diverse musical talent.Kaplansky recalls a show she did a few days after the election. She said, "We're not going to talk about politics tonight, but it's really nice to all be together." This shows her ability to connect with her audience on a deeper level.John Gorka: The New Folk Movement's Preeminent Male Singer-Songwriter
Gorka approaches his music with a light-hearted touch. His John Prine-esque ditty, "I'm From New Jersey," playfully addresses the negative image of the Garden State. He met John Prine at his first recording session in Nashville through their mutual friend, Jim Rooney. Gorka humorously shares, "Jim said John and I shared a skewed vision of the world." When asked about the label "pre-eminent male singer-songwriter of the New Folk movement," he explains, "Rolling Stone called me that because most of the people doing the acoustic thing didn't want to be called folk singers. I had no problem with that. I thought the New Folk Movement was a style of dance. But you can call me 'Pre.'"Patty Larkin and Cliff Eberhardt: The Unsung Heroes of Folk Music
Patty Larkin and Cliff Eberhardt are two other talented folk artists who will be part of this special evening. Their music adds to the rich tapestry of folk music and brings a unique flavor to the stage. Their stories and songs are a testament to the enduring power of folk music. These four artists, with their diverse styles and talents, will come together on December 20 at the Sunset Center. The event starts at 7:30 pm and tickets range from $40 to $70. You can get more information by calling 620 - 2048 or visiting sunsetcenter.org. Folk music continues to thrive, and this gathering is a testament to its everlasting appeal.
