After fifteen remarkable years, the Waking Windows music festival is set to draw its curtain with a final edition scheduled from May 2 to May 4 in Winooski. This indie-music extravaganza, traditionally marking the unofficial arrival of spring, has been a staple in downtown Winooski every early May. Before the pandemic, the festival had expanded significantly, only to return even larger in 2022 featuring international acts such as Japanese Breakfast and Dry Cleaning. However, recent signs indicated that this beloved event might be nearing its end, as the last few editions saw a reduction in big-name performances and crowd sizes, reverting closer to its original focus on local talent.
In a candid statement, co-organizer Ali Nagle expressed to the Burlington Free Press in 2023 that organizing the festival remains a passion project rather than a full-time commitment. “The stress involved is undeniable, and we prefer not to endure it as much,” she admitted. The Nagles, alongside Paddy Reagan and Nick Mavodones, have spearheaded the festival's operations. Former co-organizer Matt Rogers transitioned into his role as director of programming at the Flynn in Burlington. An announcement via email and social media on April 18 revealed the growing financial instability impacting independent festivals like theirs. Personal and family demands also compelled them to confront the inevitable conclusion of their labor of love.
Beyond the three-day main event, Waking Windows hosts occasional concerts throughout the year at venues like The Monkey House in Winooski. These performances will persist post-festival. This year’s lineup includes out-of-town artists Palehound, Cut Worms, and Combo Chimbita, complemented by local talents Rough Francis, Lily Seabird, and Paper Castles, with the peak activity occurring on Saturday, May 3.
The farewell message reflects deeply on the connections forged over the past decade and a half. It emphasizes gratitude for the opportunities they've shared and the magic created through collaborations, joyful moments, discoveries, and enduring friendships. Contributions from supporters and attendees have played an instrumental role in crafting something truly unique and beautiful. Organizers encourage fans to secure tickets before May 1 to support both the festival and the artists striving to make this final celebration unforgettable.
Concluding their heartfelt message, organizers acknowledge the challenging times but urge continued support for cherished events to prevent their disappearance. Their legacy will live on through the memories and bonds formed over the years.
