2025-05-08

A remarkable achievement marked the 70th edition of Italy's prestigious David Di Donatello awards, where Maura Delpero's historical drama Vermiglio captured the coveted Best Film title. Celebrated in Rome's iconic Cinecittà film studio, this ceremony highlighted Vermiglio’s dominance as it swept seven trophies, including best directing for Delpero herself. The event celebrated Italian cinema's rich tapestry by showcasing diverse narratives and honoring exceptional talent.

Despite fierce competition from other nominees, Vermiglio stood out against Paolo Sorrentino's opulent tribute to Naples, Parthenope, and Andrea Segre's political biopic, The Great Ambition. While Parthenope left empty-handed, The Great Ambition secured two accolades: Elio Germano for his portrayal of Enrico Berlinguer and Jacopo Quadri for editing. Other notable mentions included Tecla Insolia's powerful performance in L’arte della gioia, earning her Best Actress, and Francesco Di Leva's supporting role recognition. Additionally, Margherita Vicario was honored for her debut feature, Gloria!, which depicted an all-female orchestra in early-1800s Italy.

The global spotlight illuminated the ceremony with Timothée Chalamet gracing the occasion to accept an honorary award for cinematic excellence. Esteemed figures such as Pupi Avati and Giuseppe Tornatore were also acknowledged for their lifetime contributions to film. International films joined the celebration, with Sean Baker's Anora adding another trophy to its collection. This grand evening not only crowned outstanding achievements but also reinforced the importance of storytelling that connects cultures worldwide, proving art's universal power to inspire and unite humanity through shared experiences.
