Jazz Legend Roger Humphries to Ring in 2025 in Western Pennsylvania

People in Western Pennsylvania are in for a treat as jazz legend Roger Humphries prepares to bring in 2025 with his remarkable music. Humphries, a Pittsburgh jazz icon, will present “Roger Humphries Celebrates the Music of Ray Charles” with his big band and vocalists from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 at the Byham Theater in Downtown Pittsburgh. This event is set to be a celebration like no other, offering a unique blend of blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel.
Honoring a Local Legend
In October, East Jefferson Street on the North Side was renamed Roger Humphries Way, a true honor for the Pittsburgh native who grew up in this neighborhood. Humphries himself said, “I don’t think of my legacy. Local rapper Frzy will headline the evening, performing a variety of songs including “Gold In It,” “You ain’t got no money,” and some new tunes from the Highmark Stage at 10:45 p.m. until after midnight. The 31st annual Highmark First Night Pittsburgh offers a plethora of free and ticketed events throughout the Cultural District. Comedians Ed Bailey and Day Bracey will bring “Ed & Day in the ‘Burgh: Epic Comedy on New Year’s Eve” from 10 to 11 p.m. at the Byham Theater. “Kierra Darshell’s Drag Show” will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. and 10 to 11 p.m. at the Greer Cabaret Theater. Darshell's talent and experience make her shows a must-see.Acrobatic Performances
An acrobatic troupe from East Africa, Zuzu African Acrobats, will perform in the James E. Rohr Building, Trust Arts Education Center starting at 6:30 p.m. Their fast-paced performances combine traditional African acrobatics, high-energy tumbling, balancing acts, and humor. The Alumni Theater Company will also blend original songs and spoken word moments at 7 p.m. in the same building.Magic and Entertainment
Liberty Magic is hosting “Luis Carreon: A Glimpse of The Beast,” a one-man magic show that highlights his Latin heritage through off-the-wall comedy. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and offer a unique entertainment experience.Family-Friendly Fun
There will be a Highmark Holiday Block Party and AHN Family Zone with hands-on activities and family-friendly fun at the corner of Penn Avenue and 7th Street across from the Benedum Center. CitiParks will add a story set for kids. The annual New Year’s Eve parade kicks off between 8 and 8:30 p.m., and the Dollar Bank Children’s Fireworks are at 6 p.m. at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street. There will also be a performance by this year’s GBU Life sing-off competition winner followed by a Family Rave with disc jockey Todd Griffin.The Tradition Continues
