Eric Schroeder, a remarkable individual from Gibraltar, seamlessly combines his roles as a teacher and a saxophonist. While many musicians in the area have day jobs to support their musical aspirations, Schroeder stands out by teaching math at Gibraltar High School while also captivating audiences with his jazz saxophone at local venues like Twelve Eleven Wine Bar and Anchored Roots Vineyard and Winery.

Uniting Education and Music in Gibraltar

Starting the Musical Journey

Schroeder's musical odyssey began in 6th grade when he picked up the saxophone, and it became his sole instrument of choice. Even during his engineering school years and early career, he took a break but reignited his passion about 14 years ago while working in South Korea. He has explored various saxophone variations, from baritone to soprano, owning tenors, sopranos, an almost-100-year-old alto, and an electric saxophone. This diverse experience has enriched his musical repertoire and skills.

His love for the saxophone lies in the satisfaction of seeing small improvements with each practice session. Whether it's mastering a difficult part of a song or making simple melodies more beautiful, he finds joy in the continuous growth and challenge.

Local Gig Performances

For local gigs, Schroeder typically performs solo, focusing on jazz standards and smooth jazz. Occasionally, he also incorporates yacht rock or contemporary jazz if the venue requests. His goal is to enhance the ambiance, allowing people to enjoy the venue, food, and drinks without being overly distracted by his music. He looks forward to playing holiday songs every December, as it was through these performances that he got back into playing after moving back to the States.

His first gigs at Twelve Eleven Wine Bar were a turning point. The new business was willing to take a chance on live music, initially paying him in wine. This partnership opened up more opportunities around the peninsula and for private parties. In Korea, he played for his coworkers at the Blue Note Jazz Club, which helped him overcome the fear of performing in front of others.

Winter Plans and Goals

This winter, Schroeder has a busy schedule with gigs and private parties. He also enjoys attending Gibraltar sports games and other events. Additionally, he plans to teach a teen-focused spin class at the YMCA again. As an avid silent sports enthusiast, he loves biking and hopes for a good amount of snow to enjoy more cross-country skiing.

One of his winter goals is to learn the flute. He believes that saxophone players can pick it up a bit easier and is looking to purchase one. This new endeavor will add another dimension to his musical pursuits.

Schroeder's next gig at Anchored Roots, located at 4873 Willow Road in Egg Harbor, will take place on Dec. 7 from 2-4 pm. On the same day, Anchored Roots will offer wreath-decorating workshops at 10 am and 2 pm, with Little Miss Addie's Cupcakes on-hand from 11:30 am to 2 pm. Workshop registration is required; visit anchoredrootswine.com for more information.
