Design and Location

Crafted by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from the Tokyo-based firm SANAA, the over 35,000-square-foot structure is a sight to behold. It features three cube-like volumes and is adorned in red brick. Situated on the school's west campus, adjacent to the Eero Saarinen-designed Kresge Auditorium and MIT Chapel, it stands as a prominent addition to the campus landscape.This new building provides a diverse range of spaces including classroom, performance, rehearsal, and studio areas, all meticulously designed to meet the needs of music enthusiasts.

Academic and Performance Aspects

MIT quietly began holding classes at the new Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building during the fall semester. With a grand opening planned on Feb. 15, the state-of-the-art facility will include a 390-seat Thomas Tull Concert Hall.President Sally Kornbluth emphasized the significance of music at MIT, stating that for many, it is close to their hearts. The exceptional practice and recording spaces within the building will equip MIT musicians with the tools they deserve, while the beautiful performance hall will attract audiences from across campus and the larger community who have a passion for live music.There are approximately 30 on-campus ensembles at MIT, and more than 1,500 students enroll in music classes each academic year. Keeril Makan, associate dean for strategic initiatives in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, highlighted the tremendous growth in music-making from multiple traditions, both in terms of performance and academics. In this building, all forms of music are intended to coexist harmoniously.The February open house is open to all, offering an afternoon of exciting activities and performances. A spokeswoman revealed that there will be more than 25 concerts at Tull Concert Hall accessible to the public this spring, further enriching the musical experience at MIT.
