A Parkersburg South High School senior is making waves in both the musical and automotive worlds. Ethan Perry, an 18-year-old with a knack for storytelling through music, has achieved numerous accolades in vocal and instrumental performance while preparing for a future in auto body work. From being part of elite school ensembles to winning awards at regional competitions, Perry's dedication to his craft shines through in every note he plays and every car he restores.
Growing up surrounded by melodies, Ethan Perry developed a deep connection with music early on. As a member of several auditioned groups within his high school, including the Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble, and Madrigal Singers, Perry has consistently demonstrated exceptional talent. His proficiency extends beyond singing; he excels as a musician, mastering instruments like the tenor saxophone and French horn. Notably, he secured first-chair positions for three years in the Jazz Band and four years in the Symphonic Band. What sets Perry apart is not just his technical skill but also his ability to express emotions through country music, which remains close to his heart.
Perry’s journey into music began with learning the trumpet in fifth grade before transitioning to the French horn under the guidance of his sixth-grade teacher. This marked the start of a lifelong passion for various instruments, many of which he taught himself. Today, he boasts proficiency in approximately 30 instruments, ranging from saxophones and banjos to percussion equipment. Recently, he added piano to his repertoire, further showcasing his adaptability and drive. Among his achievements, Perry received recognition as Outstanding Soloist Saxophone in the Southern Regional Jazz Band Festival and earned the prestigious Maestro Award at the World Strides Music Festival in Chicago.
Beyond music, Perry harbors another significant interest—automotive restoration. Over the summers, he works on a family farm, honing skills that translate into his passion for repairing vehicles. Accepted into Lincoln Tech in Nashville, Tennessee, Perry plans to pursue a career in diesel technology, specializing in body work. Already studying at the Wood County Technical Center and employed part-time in the field, he balances academics with practical experience. His current project involves restoring a 1995 Chevy S-10 truck, illustrating his commitment to excellence whether crafting songs or rebuilding engines.
Perry reflects on how these pursuits have shaped his character, emphasizing the value of independence and perseverance. Managing responsibilities such as paying for his vehicle and insurance teaches him valuable life lessons about prioritizing hard work over instant gratification. Whether performing on stage or tinkering under the hood, Perry approaches each task with unwavering determination, proving that versatility and passion can coexist harmoniously.
