The Music in the Mountains Youth Orchestra (MIMYO) is all set to present its much-awaited semester concert. This event will take place on Tuesday, December 3 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (Bldg. N12) at Sierra College Grass Valley Campus. Tickets for this remarkable concert are priced at $10 for adults, while youth aged 17 and under can attend for free.An Alumnus's Perspective
As an alumnus who has been with MIMYO since its inception, I hold a special place in my heart. It is a privilege to now mentor these young talents. I am constantly learning and making mistakes myself, and it is inspiring to see the same in them. Orchestra is a haven where we come together to create art. As youth orchestra mentor Hayley Watson explains, "The concert we play on Tuesday will be a one-of-a-kind experience. It will never be repeated as music is not just about the notes; it's about how you play them, how you handle mistakes, and how you support your fellow musicians. It is a beautiful product of hard work, creativity, and teamwork. I am proud to be a part of it, and I hope you will be proud to be our audience."
Unique Musical Journey
Under the expert direction of Shannon Devir, MIMYO stands as the only youth orchestra in the region. Now in its 10th season, it began in 2015 when MIM adopted the Nevada County Youth Orchestra into its programming. This season's program is filled with adventurous repertoire that will take the audience on a musical journey. Shannon Devir notes, "I love working with these kids every week. While musicians often spend a lot of time honing their skills alone at home, MIMYO provides the opportunity to celebrate our hard work together and discover the joy of creating living, breathing music as a team." MIM works tirelessly to support students by instilling in them a love and appreciation for music.
Repertoire Highlights
The concert is the crowning achievement of the semester's hard work. MIMYO rehearsals are held on Mondays from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and are an integral part of Music in the Mountains' education programs, which range from after-school instrumental instruction to in-classroom learning. The orchestra features about 20 students, their mentors, and some MIMYO alumni. Marge Shasberger, director of education programs for MIM, comments, "The orchestra just keeps getting better every year. This will be a wonderful concert, featuring classics by Bach, Dvorak, and Bersovsky, as well as contemporary compositions like 'Legend of the Dragon Chasers' by Chris Thomas and 'Voyager' by Soon Hee Newbold. It's a fun concert for all!"
