The New Horizons Band of Western New York is set to commence its rehearsals on January 29th, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their 20th anniversary season. Under the guidance of Dr. Katherine McKay, this ensemble invites both seasoned musicians and novices to join their vibrant community. Rehearsals take place twice weekly at SUNY Fredonia's campus, offering a welcoming environment for individuals looking to either return to music or embark on a musical journey for the first time. The band has over 60 members and emphasizes that it's never too late to start playing an instrument. This spring, they will also introduce a beginner’s band specifically designed for mature adults.
Dr. Katherine McKay, Professor Emeritus of Music Education at SUNY Fredonia, leads the New Horizons Band with enthusiasm and expertise. Her belief in the joy of music-making extends beyond age barriers, encouraging everyone to participate. The band provides a unique opportunity for those who have previously played instruments but may have taken a break, as well as for beginners eager to learn. Advanced students from the Fredonia School of Music contribute by offering group lessons, ensuring a supportive learning atmosphere. Rehearsals and lessons are held in Mason Hall on Wednesdays and Fridays, with specific times allocated for each activity. The highlight of the season will be the Spring Concert, scheduled for April 8th at King Concert Hall.
McKay’s extensive experience with New Horizons Bands spans across various locations, including Iowa, Ontario, and Georgia. She founded a New Horizons Band in Hagerstown, Maryland, further demonstrating her commitment to fostering musical communities. Her philosophy centers around the idea that making music should not be confined to younger generations. Instead, she advocates for a more inclusive approach where anyone can enjoy the process of learning and performing music when provided with quality instruction and a nurturing environment.
This initiative aims to bring together people from diverse backgrounds who share a common passion for music. Whether you're picking up an instrument after years of hiatus or starting fresh, the New Horizons Band offers a platform to explore and develop your musical talents. With dedicated instructors and fellow musicians, participants can look forward to a fulfilling and enjoyable experience throughout the spring season. The upcoming concert promises to showcase the progress and achievements of all members, celebrating the power of music to unite and inspire.
