Significant Changes at Saint Thomas Church: A New Era for Choir and Music Ministry
2025-01-18

In a significant development, Saint Thomas Church in New York is set to undergo major changes in its music ministry. The church has announced a collaboration with the Professional Children’s School, which will take effect from September 2025. This partnership aims to provide academic education for the choristers. Additionally, the church will introduce new musical programs, including a girls' choir and an expanded outreach project. As part of these transitions, Jeremy Filsell and Rebecca Kellerman-Filsell will depart from their roles during the summer of 2025. The Vestry acknowledges Jeremy's outstanding contributions over the past six years, particularly in rebuilding the Choir of Men and Boys after challenging times. They have expressed gratitude for his leadership and achievements.

The decision by Saint Thomas Church to enter into this collaboration signifies a shift towards broader musical ambitions. Starting in September 2025, the Professional Children’s School will be responsible for the academic education of the choristers. This move comes as the church seeks to enhance its music program through various initiatives. One of the key changes includes the introduction of a separate girls' choir and a choir composed of professional men and women. Moreover, the Noble Singers program, initiated by Rebecca Kellerman-Filsell, will expand its outreach to local children. These adjustments aim to enrich the church's musical offerings and reach a wider audience.

JEREMY FILSELL'S tenure at Saint Thomas Church has been marked by remarkable accomplishments. Since joining in 2018, he has significantly expanded the choir's repertoire and elevated its performance standards. His efforts have been particularly commendable following the death of John Scott and the subsequent challenges faced during the pandemic. Under Jeremy's guidance, the choir has achieved exceptional singing quality, and the church's concert provision has seen notable improvements. The Vestry recognizes these achievements and appreciates Jeremy's dedication to maintaining high musical standards despite difficult circumstances. Rebecca Kellerman-Filsell has also played a crucial role as the Music Associate for Children and Youth, Concerts, and Media Coordinator for Music, contributing to the overall success of the music ministry.

As the church embarks on this new chapter, the Vestry remains committed to ensuring the continued excellence of its music ministry. A Search Committee chaired by Dr. Karl Saunders has been formed to find Jeremy's successor. The committee aims to identify someone who can build upon Dr. Filsell's legacy and further develop the new Choir School model. The Vestry encourages support and prayers during this transition period, expressing confidence that the community will continue to thrive musically. With these changes, Saint Thomas Church looks forward to embracing fresh musical visions and expanding its impact within the community.
