Prince Harry Reveals Daughter Lilibet's Red Hair in 2024 Holiday Card
2024-12-16
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's 2024 holiday card has captured the attention of many. Among the six photos on display, one particular image is generating a lot of buzz. Nestled among the pictures of their travels to Nigeria and Colombia this year, the top middle photo showcases a rare sight - their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Archie, 5, and Lilibet, 3, run towards Harry, 40, and Meghan, 43, who are standing with open arms alongside their beloved dogs Guy, Pula, and Momma Mia.

Accompanying Message and First Appearance of the Sussex Kids

The photos on the card, released on Monday, Dec. 16, are accompanied by a heartfelt message. It reads, "On behalf of the office of Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Archewell Productions and Archewell Foundation. We wish you a very happy holiday season and a joyful new year." This photo of Archie and Lilibet is the first time the Sussex kids have been shown since they briefly appeared in Harry & Meghan, the six-part docuseries that the couple debuted on Netflix two years ago in December 2022.

Prince Harry's Remarks on Archie and Lilibet's Red Hair

Archie and Lilibet are shown from behind, fully revealing their red hair, which Prince Harry has spoken about recently. On Sept. 30, Prince Harry attended the WellChild Awards in London. There, he told Hello! chief content officer Sophie Vokes-Dudgeon that both "Archie and Lili have been blessed with their mother's thick hair." Vokes-Dudgeon wrote that Harry also "marveled that it won't be long until Lili can sit on hers." This isn't the first time Harry has spoken about Archie and Lili's red hair. During an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the Duke of Sussex spoke of his mother Princess Diana's Spencer family, saying, "the Spencer gene is very, very strong." He continued, "I actually really, genuinely thought at the beginning of my relationship [with Meghan] that, should this go the distance and we have kids, that there's no way the ginger gene will stand up to my wife's genes - but I was wrong!" Harry jokingly added, "Go gingers." In addition to Harry, all three of Diana's siblings - Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Lady Jane Fellowes, and Earl Charles Spencer - all have red hair.

Lilibet's Red Hair: A Family Trait

Lilibet's red hair was first revealed in the 2021 Sussex family holiday card, six months after her birth in June that year. It was the first photo shared of Harry and Meghan's only daughter. The photo of the newly-minted family of four was accompanied by the message, "This year, 2021, we welcomed our daughter, Lilibet to the world. Archie made us a 'Mama' and a 'Papa,' and Lili made us a family." The 2021 photo was taken by Alexi Lubomirski, who also snapped Harry and Meghan's official engagement portraits four years earlier in 2017. Lilibet's red hair was on display again when Harry and Meghan released an official portrait of her to mark her first birthday in June 2022.

Meghan's Thoughts on Lilibet

Though Harry and Meghan wish to keep their children's lives private, as loving parents, they do occasionally open up about their daughter. Just weeks after Lili's birth, Prince Harry told guests at a private garden party for the WellChild Awards that his daughter was "very chilled and seems happy to just sit there while Archie is running around like crazy." During an episode of her Archetypes podcast, Meghan said of her daughter that "I want my Lili to want to be educated and want to be smart and to pride herself on those things." This past May, during a visit to Nigeria with Harry, Meghan had Lilibet on her mind, noting that "singing and dancing" was Lili's "favorite class," probably because of "all the jumping around."
