Rescued Tiny Chihuahua Stuck Under Texas Bridge by Multi-Person Team
2024-12-02
During the holiday weekend, a rather stubborn Chihuahua named Burbie found herself in a rather precarious situation. At the Houston Botanic Garden in Texas, on Friday, Nov. 29, visitors spotted this adventurous pup perched on a concrete beam of a pedestrian bridge over the Sims Bayou channel. The garden's staff was promptly notified of the small dog's predicament and immediately contacted two local Houston Fire Department stations for assistance.

Rescue Operations and Challenges

We love knowing that the trained community helpers at the Houston Botanic Garden are always on the job, ensuring the safety of everyone and everything. After being rescued by the firefighters, Burbie was taken in by a vet technician who identified herself. Video obtained by CBS affiliate KHOU shows the Chihuahua acting resistant during the rescue. In the 2-minute clip, the pup barked and moved away from the rescuer as he approached. In fact, the dog even bit the firefighter who swam out to the concrete beam to save it. During the rescue, Burbie also jumped into the body of water surrounding the bridge and began to swim away. But the firefighter was quick and managed to catch up to the dog and bring it to safety. Photos from the botanical garden show the dog snugly wrapped in a towel in the arms of a smiling firefighter after the rescue.

Aftermath and Reunion

On Saturday, Nov. 30, a second article from KHOU revealed that Burbie has reunited with its owners. The vet technician who picked up the pup after the rescue, Judy Hausler, kept the pooch overnight and then met with the family to return the Chihuahua. Hausler described the rescue as quite an experience. She said, "She started standing up and barking, like yapping, more yap than bark. It was really kind of cute." She added, "It just worked out that I was there, and I said, 'I'm going to take the dog, and I'll find it a home.'" The reunion was an emotional one, and Burbie's family members were all crying. The owners claimed that Burbie went missing on Monday, Nov. 25, and was not wearing a collar. Now, they are planning on getting the pup microchipped to avoid such incidents in the future. One of the owners told KHOU, "We are very grateful for the efforts of the first responders and everyone involved to help us bring our baby home. I don't think there's anything we could possibly do to repay their efforts, but I will say that I am very grateful."
