Salina is gearing up for a couple of musical Christmas extravaganzas over the next few weekends. These events have quickly become beloved by the community and offer a wonderful holiday experience.

Experience the Magic of Tubular Christmas in Salina

Salina Tuba Christmas - December 14th

Every year, 25-30 tuba and baritone players come together for this event. Tuba Christmas is a global music phenomenon that honors those who play, teach, and compose for the tuba family. The first Tuba Christmas was organized in 1974 at New York City's Rockefeller Center by Harvey G. Phillips in honor of his tuba teacher William Bell. Over 300 musicians played that day, starting a cherished holiday tradition. Alec Wilder wrote the arrangements of the Christmas carols, and coincidentally, he passed away on Christmas Eve in 1980. In Salina, Ron McWilliams, a retired tuba player from the Salina Symphony, coordinates this event. Traditional Christmas carols fill the air as low brass players from area high schools and colleges join forces with adults.

This is a time when the sound of tubas and baritones resonates through the Central Mall, spreading holiday cheer. It's a sight and a sound that truly captures the essence of Christmas.

Salina Area Wide Christmas Brass Choir - December 21st

Last year, over 65 brass players took part in this magnificent choir. This year, organizers are anticipating an even larger group. The choir provides inspiring holiday music that lifts spirits during the busy holiday season. Brass players from area high schools, colleges, and seasoned adults come together to create a harmonious ensemble. Four years ago, this group was formed with the intention of bringing Christmas brass ensemble music to the community.

The concert features a variety of traditional Christmas favorites and current holiday songs. This year, Santa will make an appearance, adding an extra touch of magic. Rev. James Strasen will also give a Christmas reading before the final selection. It's a truly unforgettable event that brings the community together.

Both concerts are free and will last approximately 45 minutes. They are under the direction of retired instrumental music instructor Steven Leuth, ensuring a high level of musical excellence. Come and experience the joy of these Tubular Christmas events in Salina!
