2024-12-10
Tanner Adell, the Nashville-based singer-songwriter, is making waves with her genre-bending sound and unapologetic demeanor. As one of PEOPLE’s 2024 Ones to Watch in music, she has taken the country music scene by storm. Adell, 28, shares her journey and insights with us in this exclusive interview.
Discovering Her Musical Path
Music has always been a dream for Tanner Adell. As a child, her parents encouraged her to sing in church and join the school choir. Though shy, her dad always pushed her to audition for school musicals. She would aim for small parts but often ended up with lead roles. It took a voice teacher in college to help her realize her true potential. Her voice coach believed she didn't need school; she should go out and be a full-time artist. Nashville became the obvious choice, and she has been there for three years now.Adell's sound is a unique blend that she didn't intentionally seek. In the studio with producers and other writers, she was open about her opinions. It took time to find the right people who could bring her vision to life. Her music leans on both the country and pop sides, creating a perfect harmony.First Live Music Experience
Adell's first live music experience was seeing One Direction. It was her best friend's birthday, and they got 10 tickets. At just 11 years old, she was in awe and cried during the concert. Watching their documentary recently after Liam's passing reminded her of the impact that live music can have.Finding Friends in the Country Music Community
The country music community is tight-knit, and Tanner Adell has found many friends along the way. One of them is Lainey Wilson. They have been around each other a lot this year, working on the Twisters soundtrack together. Being a female in country music is challenging, with less radio play and touring opportunities. But Lainey has worked hard and is now one of the leading females in the genre. Adell can text or call her anytime, and she has been a great support.Reyna Roberts is also someone Adell considers a friend. They have shared experiences and bonded over their love for music.Singing on "BLACKBIIRD"
When Adell found out she would be singing on "BLACKBIIRD", she was shocked and excited. She had a hunch it might be her, and it was a great experience for her. The process was personal and not like a typical job posting. The best part was seeing her fan base grow and bond during that time. She was already doing her own thing and this was a huge co-sign.Latest Song Release - "Religion"
"Religion" was a very specific song for Adell. She wrote it in one day but it took almost a year for the idea to fully form. She had a life-altering experience that led her to question her beliefs. After a year of healing, she wrote the song with Parker, who also had religious trauma. Together, they were able to express their emotions through music.Leaving the Mormon Church
Adell is no longer practicing Mormonism. Her family still is, but they support her and are her biggest fans. Her adoption story is unique; she was adopted at birth and is one of five siblings, all of whom are biracial. Her parents couldn't have their own children and adopted five babies. Three years ago, she found her birth family, which is a new chapter in her life.Current Projects
Adell is a workaholic and is currently writing an album. She has been focused on writing for about a year, and there are some very personal and deep songs on it. It will tell her story and is set to be released next year.A "You Day"
On a "you day", Adell relaxes by smoking weed and playing her Nintendo Switch. It's her ideal way to unwind.
