Austin Tice's Mother Claims He's Alive 12 Years After Kidnapping in Syria
2024-12-07
For over 12 years, the parents of Austin Tice, the American journalist kidnapped in Syria, have clung to a glimmer of hope. His mother, Debra Tice, took the stage at a news conference on Friday, December 6th, at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. She boldly claimed that based on a new report, her journalist son is alive and being treated well. "We have from a significant source that has already been vetted all over our government, Austin Tice is alive, Austin Tice is treated well," Debra stated firmly during the press conference. "And there is no doubt about that."
The U.S. Government's Stance
The U.S. government is concealing the source's identity, yet government officials have verified its credibility, according to Debra. At a White House press briefing, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre declined to comment on the matter. "I don't have anything to share about conversation on this particular matter," she told the press. This has led to much speculation and doubt among those following the case. The Press Freedom Center's Perspective
Bill McCarren, the director of the Press Freedom Center at the National Press Club, is certain that the Biden administration is "lying" about what they know regarding the journalist's kidnapping. This has added another layer of complexity to an already difficult situation. The Family's Journey
The Tices flew to Washington D.C. this week amidst the revived Syrian civil war. Their meeting was initially scheduled for July and had nothing to do with the current conflict. During their meeting with President Biden's national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, they inquired if Biden would contact Assad about their son's release. Sullivan provided them with no assurances, leaving them feeling frustrated. Simon Tice, the brother of the kidnapped journalist, expressed his disappointment, saying, "There just seems to be a massive disconnect between what President Biden has dictated for Austin in terms of doing everything that we can to bring him home, and then the actions and the behavior of the people that sit just below him."Debra's Optimism
Debra expressed optimism in President-elect Donald Trump bringing her son home. She recalled that Trump previously "had an obsession" with helping Tice during his previous term. This hope gives the family some solace in the midst of their long ordeal.Austin Tice originally from Houston, Texas, reported for numerous news organizations including CBS News, The Washington Post and McClatchy. He disappeared on August 14, 2012, while reporting on the Syrian civil war. Weeks later, a video surfaced showing a blindfolded Tice being held by armed men saying, "Oh, Jesus." That marked the last time anyone heard from him. In 2022, Biden said "with certainty" that the U.S. knew that Syrian authorities had Tice in their possession. The Assad government has denied all allegations of kidnapping Tice. The family's story is a testament to the power of hope and the lengths they will go to bring their loved one home. Despite the setbacks and uncertainties, they continue to hold on, waiting for the day when Austin Tice will be reunited with his family.
