Bob Dylan Endorses Timothée Chalamet for Biopic as a "Brilliant Actor"
2024-12-04
Timothée Chalamet has been granted the highest level of approval to portray Bob Dylan in the upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown. This news has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and has fans eagerly awaiting the release of the film. Dylan himself has officially thrown his support behind Chalamet, adding an extra layer of credibility to the project. The folk-rock legend, now 83 years old, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, December 4th, exactly three weeks before the movie's theatrical debut. In his post, Dylan expressed his confidence in Chalamet's ability to bring him to life on the big screen. "There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!)," Dylan began. "Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me." The film is based on Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric and offers a unique retelling of the events that led up to the fiasco at Newport in the early 1960s. After seeing the movie, fans are encouraged to read the book to gain a deeper understanding of the story. A Complete Unknown follows Dylan's early life and career as he rose to prominence during the 1960s. In addition to Chalamet, the movie also stars an impressive ensemble cast including Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, Edward Norton, Boyd Holbrook, Dan Fogler, Norbert Leo Butz, Eriko Hatsune, Big Bill Morgenfield, Scoot McNairy, and Will Harrison. Elle Fanning, who plays Sylvie Russo in the movie, based on Dylan's real-life girlfriend and muse Suze Rotolo, recently praised Chalamet's "extraordinary" performance. During a spotlight conversation at The Wrap's 2024 WrapWomen Power Women Summit at the Maybourne Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, Fanning expressed her emotions upon hearing Chalamet sing as Dylan for the first time. "I remember tearing up," she said. "And so seeing him accomplish this and this character in such a beautiful way [was moving]." Chalamet has already been generating a lot of buzz for his performance. Journalist Scott Menzel wrote on X that he "delivers the performance of the year" as a young Dylan. "A true tour-de-force where Chalamet is never seen," Menzel added. "Chalamet’s performance is not just about the voice and look but rather all of the little nuances and mannerisms that he perfectly brings to his life in his portrayal of Bob Dylan." On Monday, December 2nd, Chalamet received The Gotham Film & Media Institute's Visionary Tribute honor at this year's Gotham Awards for his work in A Complete Unknown, alongside director James Mangold. In his acceptance speech, the Oscar nominee expressed his gratitude. "I’m grateful to everyone who poured themselves into this project," he said. "Getting to study and immerse myself in the world of Bob Dylan has been the greatest education a young artist could receive." A Complete Unknown is set to hit theaters on December 25th, promising to be a must-see event for fans of both Dylan and Chalamet.
