Discovering the Musical Fusion of New & Ancient Christmas Music
2024-11-27
For a long time, Rami Atassi has been accustomed to hearing Christmas music played on church pipe organs, accompanied by the out-of-tune singing of many people. Intriguingly, he considers both these aspects as inspirations for his highly inventive seasonal EP, "New & Ancient Christmas Music". Atassi is a widely respected Syrian American guitarist and teacher based in Chicago. His work is often infused with Indian influences, along with elements of Tuareg, afrobeat, and spiritual jazz. Thus, he presents here a spicy combination to enliven a selection of ordinary Christmas tunes.

Uncover the Spicy Blend of Christmas Music with Rami Atassi

Opening with We Three Kings

Atassi chose fretless guitars and percussion as the foundation for this project, recording it as a three-piece with no overdubs. The rattling drums on the opener "We Three Kings" create an atmosphere as if entering the spirit world. As he teases out the original tune's eastern tones, it becomes a captivating journey. Halfway through, he adds a mystic passage, as if conducting a nocturnal ceremony where everything is filled with vibration and harmony. Atassi has recently been writing melodies using an Arabic natural minor scale, and this tune provides a perfect opportunity to put it to good use. This version of "We Three Kings" takes the listener on a unique musical adventure, blending different cultural elements and creating a truly immersive experience. It showcases Atassi's ability to transform a traditional Christmas tune into something new and exciting.

Bluesy Makeover of Go Tell It On The Mountain

Go Tell It On The Mountain is given a bluesy makeover that suits its origins in the African American tradition. Atassi brings this hymn back to its oral roots, reminding us of its murky plantation beginnings. It is far from the orchestrated blowouts often associated with cathedral choirs. Instead, it is more like the stuff of New Orleans nightlife, with handheld percussion and slurring sliding licks. This version has a gritty quality that comes from the heart, adding a new dimension to the familiar song.By giving "Go Tell It On The Mountain" a bluesy twist, Atassi pays homage to the African American musical heritage while also creating a fresh and unique interpretation. It shows his versatility as a musician and his ability to connect with different musical styles.

Funky Greensleeves

Despite the many rumours, Greensleeves was not actually written by Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn. However, Henry was known for his love of dancing and often postponed state affairs to enjoy himself in the medieval mosh circle. Atassi's broody intro sets the stage for a funked-up version of Greensleeves with a fiery psychedelic edge. This rendition of Greensleeves combines different elements to create a unique and captivating sound. It adds a new layer of excitement to the traditional song, making it more than just a Christmas tune. Atassi's interpretation shows his creativity and his ability to breathe new life into old classics.

My Favorite Things - Pop Song of Noël schmalz

Through its mix of holiday and festive imagery, "My Favorite Things" is the perfect pop song of Noël schmalz. John Coltrane's deluxe instrumental take played fast and loose with the main melody while preserving a family-friendly warmth. Atassi also keeps things smoothly seasonal, jazzing up the chords over soft brush work and darting out a fireside solo or two. This song is a celebration of the holiday season, with its catchy melodies and jazzy arrangements. Atassi's interpretation adds his own touch, making it a must-listen during the Christmas season. It brings together different musical elements to create a truly enjoyable listening experience.

Transforming Auld Lang Syne

Finally, rapid woodpecker percussion and stinging guitar notes transform "Auld Lang Syne" from a folk poem to a writhing fusion workout. It is not quite Hendrix ripping up the "Star Spangled Banner", but it certainly has the energy of Atassi raking a scythe through the St Andrew's Cross. His rendition is less about mockery and more about adding wider context to the song's theme via groove and novelty. This version of "Auld Lang Syne" shows Atassi's ability to take a traditional song and turn it into something completely new. It combines different musical styles and creates a dynamic and exciting performance.Whilst some of us associate Christmas with sleet and squall, there are parts of the world where the season is experienced in sweltering heat. Atassi's radiant and rhythmic set serves as a reminder that global connections endure in the message of goodwill. His music transcends geographical and cultural boundaries, bringing people together through the power of music. "New & Ancient Christmas Music" is a testament to his talent and creativity, and a must-listen for music lovers during the holiday season.Bandcamp: https://ramiatassi.bandcamp.com/album/new-ancient-christmas-music
