“RHONY” Brynn Whitfield: Surviving Sexual Assault & Bath Soap Woes
2024-12-04
When Brynn Whitfield was in her 30s, she was living a seemingly normal life. As the chief communications officer at a pet company, she was accustomed to attending various events and supporting survivors. However, at the age of 34, her life took a tragic turn when she was sexually assaulted by a prominent man in the New York City social scene.
Opening Up About the Ordeal
Whitfield joins a Zoom call from the Hamptons, where she's spending Thanksgiving weekend with her found family. For the first time, she opens up about the harrowing experience with PEOPLE. She recalls that in her 30s, her biggest concerns were marriage, fertility checkups, and getting a mortgage. Sexual assault was the last thing on her mind. She was used to helping others but never thought it could happen to her. After the assault, she returned home in a daze, feeling like she needed to wash away the trauma. The next day, she went back to work but didn't tell anyone for months, isolating herself from friends and family.Dealing with the Aftermath
Whitfield became "asexual for months" and felt "literally numb." It took a long time for her to acknowledge what had happened to her. But when she did, it was like a "purge," and she slowly started to heal with the help of her loved ones. She entered therapy and took a risk by sharing her story. This experience changed her outlook on dating. Now, she dates with intention and is more open and vulnerable with the people she trusts.Dealing with the Assailant
To this day, Whitfield still runs into her assailant at various events. Instead of causing a scene, she shows elegance, grace, and tact. She picks up the check and signs, handling the situation with strength. She believes that this is the reality for many people who have endured similar experiences. There isn't always a day of justice, but she handles it in her own way.Hope and Inspiration
When it comes to helping other women, Whitfield hopes that her story will let them know they aren't alone. If she can help one person feel better, it's all worth it.The Real Housewives of New York City airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and can be streamed the following day on Peacock.
