X-Ray Shows Rescue Dog Was Shot in Face Before Shelter; Ready for Adoption
2024-12-19
When Twiggy first entered a Texas animal shelter, it was evident that she was in a dire state. The staff could immediately sense that something was wrong with this 2-year-old rescue. In early November, as reported in a press release by the Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), Twiggy arrived with a heart-wrenching condition. She was not only severely emaciated but also infested with fleas and parasites and battling heartworms and whipworms. Further inspection revealed more than met the eye. Her intake exam uncovered swelling under her jaw, a red flag as there were no external wounds or visible injuries. Instead, this swelling indicated something far more sinister. Given her severe upper respiratory infection, she couldn't be sedated and inspected further at that time.

Healing Amidst Adversity

The staff gave Twiggy and her other ailments time to heal. They placed her on antibiotics and closely monitored her as her frail body fought to recover. Later, when she was able to undergo sedation, an X-ray was taken, and a horrifying truth was revealed. Twiggy had been shot in the face, and the bullet was still inside her. A bullet, along with a tooth fragment, had been lodged in her jaw for weeks—possibly months—causing her great pain and suffering. The veterinary team quickly got to work and was able to surgically remove both the bullet itself and fragments, providing Twiggy with the much-needed relief. Without this intervention, Twiggy would not have survived.During her recovery, Twiggy has shown nothing but love and gratitude. Despite the trauma she has endured, she remains gentle, sweet, and trusting. She has become a staff favorite in the few weeks she has been at the shelter. Her story is a testament to her unbreakable spirit. As for Twiggy's previous owner and the person who shot her, a spokesperson for HSNT told PEOPLE that due to circumstances, justice will likely not be served. "Unfortunately, the owner will not be held accountable, and there's no way to determine exactly when or by whom she was shot," the spokesperson said. However, Twiggy is now safe, gaining weight, and slowly recovering. She will be ready for adoption next week, and her sweet, gentle spirit continues to shine through.Cassie Davidson, the senior director of marketing, communications, and public relations at HSNT, also stated in a statement, "Despite everything she has endured, Twiggy's sweet, trusting spirit remains unbroken. Our hope is for a Christmas miracle—a loving forever home where she can finally experience the care and kindness she has always deserved."
